Calvinia to Sutherland

We decided to alter our plans. Initially we planned to drive to Wuperthal and then to Calvinia. While filling up in Clanwilliam we met another Landy owner who did the Wuperthal route the previous day and said that some of the turns are going to be very tough with the trailer. He also said that they did the circle route and that it took them the whole day. We did not have that time and my Wuperthal ‘vellies’ will have to wait till next time. šŸ˜¦

Our new road was tar based but included Klawer, Van Rhynsdorp(where we had breakfast and a car wash) and Nieuwoudtsville before we reach Calvinia.

Obviously a wine cellar cant be passed šŸ˜‰

Bought some nice Port, Grape juice and a Pink Bubbly.

Nieuwoudtsville was a let down with the minimum flowers. We decided to take the trip out to the waterfall and was presented with a stunning photo opportunity close to the waterfall. The Waterfall was spectacular as well..

The sky and clouds were spectacular.

These two panoramics were shot at the same time and unfortunately because I have to resize the photos for the website it does loose some of its wowness.

We reached Calvinia and hoped that we would get some 3g to update the website but it was not to be. Even though the Guest house we stayed in was very good, neither me or Charmain really liked Calvinia. Fortunately we only had one night to stay and then we would move on to Tankwa…. or would we?

The weather predictions looked really bad for camping without power for two days. Minimum temperatures of under -4, winds of up to 50 kph with Friday morning when we have to pack up camp a maximum of 11 with a 60% chance of rain šŸ˜¦

Fortunately on this trip we learned we could change our plan at the drop of a hat and with minimum 3g/cell signal we secured one of the two nights in a guesthouse in Sutherland. More about that in the next post.

Following are pictures taken around Calvinia and on our way (170km gravel road) to Sutherland.

Just outside Calvinia we had another stop and go and we had sooo many photo opportunities on our way to Sutherland. Here is a ‘small’ collection.

This portion of the road and the Karoo is just awesome clean big sky country.

OK have to run for dinner, will try and add another post after dinner with info on a stunning guesthouse, ticking off another item from my bucket list and boring house pictures ;-).

Thanks for reading and watching.
